Joe attended Lake View Hight School in the North side of Chicago where he played Basketball and Basegall. After graduating from High School in 1944, he joined the United States Navy and served during WWII till 1946; during his military service he worked as a Radio Operator. After being honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy, Joe attended the University of Illinois (Urbana), majoing in English and in 1950 he receieved his Bachelor of Arts degree. Two years later, in 1952 he joined the Associated Press (AP) and remained with AP as a sportswriter and editor till his retirement in 1994. During his 42 years with Associated Press (AP), Joe covered everything from World Series to NFL Championships to Super Bowls, Major Fights, State Tournaments and Bowl Games. Joe's stories were run in practically every newspaper in the United States. Joe has also done many Radio and Television interviews and in recent years he has been a fillin on "Sports Writers On TV", a sports talk show which is aired on cable stations. Since his retirement in 1994, Joe has been doing some official scoring during Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox games. Joe married Claire Lesslie in 1961 and has three daughters, Maria, Leah and Angele.
