William Y. Mikhail: 1949 -
W illiam Y. Mikhail, was born in Basrah, Southern Iraq on July, 29th, 1949. His father, Yousif Youkhana, was from (Diana-Arbel), Assyria (northern Iraq today). He joined the Assyrian uprising in 1933, this uprising was suppressed by the Iraqi government, and 4500 Assyrians mostly women, children and elderly were massacred. When the Assyrian Levies was dissolved, his mother’s father Esho Lazar, an officer in the Assyrian Army, which was formed to support the British Army, moved to the city of Basrah where William's parents Yousif Youkhana of Diana-Arbel and Yolia Esho Lazar of Baghdad, met and got married. William grew up in the city of Basrah, and this is where he completed his elementary, Intermediate and high school ecucation and was admited to the University of Basrah in 1969. William's interest in politics had an early start. This was prompted by his own eye witness of the suffering of our Assyrian people due to the abuse of power of the Iraqi government system. William recalls, "My people were denied Iraqi citizenship after thousands of years living in their own land". Since immigrating to the United States in 1976, William has been living in Chicago, where he attended DeVry institute and Wright college while working for Zenith electronics corporation. While working and attending college, William's interest in Middle East and world politics affecting our Assyrian nation drove him to active involvement in Bet Nahrain Democratic Party in 1977. He has written many political articles in Assyrian and Arabic languages for Assyrian newspapers and magazines.
